Good morning all you sweet souls and welcome to another week.
As many of you may know, today is one of those days that has been adopted and reapproiated by Instagram: #WomenCrushWednesday. And while I love my sistas, I thought we could throw some support the way of those wonderful creatures we call men; the men in our lives (real or otherwise) who are simply delicious. It can be a friend, a model, a celebrity: anyone who evokes a sense of style and sex appeal. Come on, you know you don’t hate it.
So I have decided to post about something that makes me extremely happy to see evolving into a spectacular normality: exciting menswear. I have wanted to post about this for weeks now but work has been a bitch and so has the flu (oh, and my free internet at the office) so it is a delayed reaction to something that has been on my mind for a whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiile.
I remember when I was in my teens (the good old days) and I was watching one of the awards show red carpets and a comment was made that struck me; it went along the lines of “but really, what can men do other than wear a good suit with a skinny black tie”. Basically, it was boring. The only place menswear saw some creative vitality was when it was reworked for women as an androgynous trend. But our boys were left in a sea of boring black basics. Don’t get me wrong; a good suit and a skinny black tie do wonders for the ladies, but there is so much more fun to be had.
Fortunately, men all over this beautiful world have started to truly embrace fashion and trends and learnt to love the satisfaction that accompanies dressing well and taking risks. There are so many stylish men these days – on the red carpet, the runway, blogs and street stylers and guys you know from high school – it is rather wonderful. Style is not about wearing every trend (I seriously encourage you not to) but about having some fun with pieces that speak to you on whatever level – aesthetics that bring you a sense of joy and inspiration. Style is about wearing what makes you feel comfortably expressive; it is about experimenting with clothes that jump out at you and grab you. While a classic tux is still very much in favour, menswear is no longer so limited and stringent. I mean, did we not all ooh and aah over Matthew McConaughey’s luxe gold tuxedo jacket at the Oscars? I DO.
Plus, just a little bit of styling can go a loooong way – aka invest in clothes that FIT WELL. A well-tailored suit is everything. Like I said, nothing beats a well-dressed man who exudes confidence (not arrogance – learn the difference) in what he is wearing. Honestly, it can take you up several notches. Just get your clothes fitted better. Seriously. Like, please.
There are a number of international sexbombs out there doing what makes them feel good, changing the face of menswear and looking bloody fantastic doing it. But what is even more awesome is that our own Saffas are right up there with the best. In fact, one of my very good friends inspired this whole post… thank you Matthew Paul. Here is a guy that lives in good old Port Elizabeth and is taking risks and playing with colours and trends and looking ahhhh-mazing in the process. Plus you can see that he just really enjoys fashion and is doing this for himself – that kind of happiness oozes out as confidence and good taste and Pauly, I dig it. There are also a number of bloggers showing us how it’s done, and our boytjies are amongst the most enthralling. Take, for instance, South African treat whatmyboyfriendwore – seriously, ladies you will thank me later. This guys takes style to another level and is one dapper lad (without the pomp and ceremony you’d expect from a dapper lad). Another good friend (and total celeb) is the always dapper Maps Maponyane – he has his own range of suits which are the best thing I have seen in a looooong time. Check them out – OCD at Augustine that launched last year. Two other local favourites are Chu Suwannapha – Fashion Director at YOU, Drum and Huisgenoot and ‘The Prince of Prints’, and original ELLE Style Reporter and all-round fashion banger Trevor Stuurman (check out his Instagram for amazing street style and his own incredible take on menswear). These guys seriously know how to dress with flare and fun and general brilliance. finally, check out The Threaded Man on tumblr or creative director Siya Beyile on Instagram for some drool-worthy menswear to kick-start your renewed interest in a once very restrictive area of fashion.
There are obviously a TON of guys I could feature here but I have just taken a few favourites (most from Pinterest just because YUM) to inspire you, excite you and just add a little something spicy to this cold and rainy Wednesday. I have focused on my two favourite looks: Polished Suits and Street Style (and then there are just absolute treasures; wonderful humans who have managed to amalgamate the two and create a fused look that is just so good). Two different styles that are equally scrumptious/stylish.
So here you go; a tidal wave of stylish men pulling out all the stops and bringing menswear back onto the style scene. It’s a lengthy one too, because why not. It is raining and cold and these men are sex bombs. You’re welcome.
Let’s hear it for the boys.
NEVER underestimate the power of a good suit. Women crumble (well, I do) for a man in a well-tailored modern suit. It has to fit you properly – that is the key to this whole shindig. Plus there is so much more to suits now than the monochromatic medium of days gone by, so here is some inspiration boys. Have fun and look good trying.
If a full blown suit is not your thing, or just not yet, there is nothing wrong with a relaxed take on formal fashion. Carry on scrolling to see how it should be done.
And then we have the ever-growing world of mens street style – a combination of athletic formality and grunge glamour (a term and trend usually reserved for women). This is probably the ‘easier’ style to pull off, or at least be drawn to, because it is closer to what you’re wearing everyday anyway. Well, with a much more fashionable twist. This is where almost anything goes and ohhhhhh boy is it an absolute pleasure to observe.
And the man that inspired it all.
It’s a pleasure.
Until next time xxx
