So last night was the anxiously awaited and annually fabulous Met Ball 2014 (it was also Cinco de Mayo so have a tequila if you aren’t already suffering from a major Mexican hangover). The theme this year was ‘Charles James – Beyond Fashion’ – quite a contrast from 2013’s ode to all things punk (a theme which most attendees failed to adhere to which really annoyed me. Just saying). The guests were immediately greeted by a giant sculpture made of flowers to celebrate the legendary American couturier. However, a “sub-theme” seemed to underscore the evening: White Tie.
The Met Ball or Met Gala (semantics) is one of the biggest nights on the fashion calendar and showcases some of the biggest celebs and fashion icons in the most extravagant costumes and designer partnerships. Actresses dye their hair to match the theme, designers arrive with their muses and some pseudo-celebs come dressed as Mrs Doubtfire/a couch (I’m talking to you, Kim Kardashian). And, as with any hyped up spectacular, there are numerous hits and even more misses. This year proved no different, where even the greatest fashionistas and biggest celebs failed to wow me (seriously, I feel like some of them got dressed in the dark. Cough cough Katie Holmes WTF). There were also a lot of folded-in puff dresses that made some of these gorgeous women look like meringues and not even in a cute, whimsical way. I’m not sure what it is but some people were just boring and predictable or forcing their way into the fashion circle and trying far too hard to fit in. If you know even the slightest bit you will know I am referring to my loathsome relationship with Taylor Swift and recently Jennifer Lawrence (what does everyone see in this chick? Honestly). I just cannot stand them and everything they do irritates me and they never manage to impress me with their style choices and they are lame and annoying and they suck. But anyway, back to the ball. Of course, a White Tie take on fashion (shame, did everyone forget about Charles James?) creates some problems – with many monochromatic anti-climactic disasters (sorry Anna Kendrick). However, as one of the biggest trends of the year aka all seasons always and forever; black and white was done right by various couples and solo flyers so thank you and well done.
In all honesty, there were more disappointments this year than there were successes but let’s not dwell on the mistakes made by those with stylists and designers on their arms (can you tell I’m annoyed?).
So, instead of focusing on the negative, here is my round up of my favourite looks from the night. Here you go; grab yourself a cup of coffee and a comfy seat and enjoy the runway that was the Met Ball 2014.
I cannot even describe how insanely incredibly ahhhmazingly beautiful Queen B is looking lately. She is unbelievable and looks better than she has ever looked. That short hair, her new songs and her body – everything. She has totally embraced her sexuality and femininity and is proud of her body (not hard when you look like that) and is having fun and just looks so stunning. I also love how Jay Z is always by her side and obsessed with her (duh). Imagine breakfast at their house? HOW FUN.
Anyway, that Givenchy number is just too much for me to handle and I am dying.
Blake Lively looked IN…CREDIBLE last night. She has been one of the most consistently best dressed at the Met Ball over the years so congrats gurl.
Kim and Kanye kind of annoy me, especially after that lackluster Vogue cover, but I have to hand it to them here. They looked amazing and Kim oozed glamour in this Lanvin navy dress (a huge upgrade from last year’s total DEEEESASTER). And I think Kanye is as dapper as they come in this outfit. Well done, Kimye. Gross, I did not just say that.
Ok so Kristen Wiig is pretty much my favourite human being and idol and she is amazing and hilarious and brilliant and I love her. Now, she doesn’t usually blow my mind with her fashion choices but here she is with one of the hottest designers, Alexander Wang, looking super chic and cool and awesome and the best. That little shimmer and the pants and the hair and OMG she is my hero. So there.
Ok honestly, Rihanna, I am finished. This woman is KILLING IT and looked so exquisite last night. What is even better is her crew of famous friends. Seriously, just look at this group pic. And Cara, you are brilliant.
Leighton is the only person, in my eyes, that got this loose-fitting look right. I absolutely LOVE this dress. Like, a LOT.
So obvs my girl Lupits killed it at the Met Ball. She looked like a Gatsby-African princess beautiful garden fairy and that colour on her is increddddddd and she is just so phenomenal I can’t. I also think she took a risk and had some fun with this dress and it worked with the Beyond Fashion theme. She is perfection and if you disagree then BYE.
This next one might not be a very popular choice but I think she played with the theme and tried something different and it worked (unlike so many poor Met victims). Again, Prada is beyond this creation. and it is just that – a creation.
And one more for the road
Thanks for coming and you’re welcome. xxx
